The American Comeback Starts Now!
Donald Trump talks to Charlie Rose back in 1992 about his new book, “The Art of the Comeback,” two years after he was on the brink of bankruptcy with media wags predicting the ‘Trump empire’ would collapse. Today, Trump is mounting a comeback two years after he lost the presidency as an incumbent in 2020.
Has the King Lost his Crown?
First of all, look how young and handsome The Donald was back then; and secondly, why does everyone say this man is brash when he speaks in such dulcet intimate tones?
The seeds of today’s virulent TDS are evident in this interview. Charlie is playing tiddly-winks with Trump compared to how he is treated now.
But one has to wonder how and why Donald Trump, of all the real estate developers in New York, became the target of so many smears, gossip and negative press. We know something stuck. We just do not know the whole story.
I had posted on social media this oddly providential interview before his big announcement while he was taking heat from all quarters (with Republicans being the most offended) for a jab he made toward Florida’s popular Governor Ron DeSantis just three days before the all-important midterm elections.
Back then Trump was losing friends and business allies left and right because he, like many other developers in real estate at the time, was quote un-quote ‘on the brink of bankruptcy.’
After exchanging pleasantries, Rose wants to know, ‘Has the king lost his crown? Can the Trump empire survive? How did you survive? You wrote these books, The Art of the Deal and Surviving at the Top and now The Art of the Comeback, is it a comeback?’
Trump tells Rose at 2:41 when he asked him whether he was different after surviving near-financial ruin than he was two or three years ago, Trump said:
Rose continued to pursue him, saying that people said he was vindictive. “If people betrayed you or aren’t there for you, will you get them back? “No, I won’t Charlie. I don’t really care about that…You just keep on fighting.”
Trump is WYSIWYG.
Fast Forward to The American Comeback Speech
Thirty years later, as the political elites in both parties had hoped they could finally send the 45th president to a nether world of former presidents to build his legacy from quiet obscurity, he announces he’s running again.
Trump is whack-a-mole.
In that two-year span between losing the election, which eerily parallels the two years it took a much younger Donald Trump to climb back to the top of the real estate world, he has been valiantly fighting – most of the time as a solitary figure – to rescue America in two tangible ways:
- Implementing election integrity measures that might serve as a band-aid against the massive use of various tactics – some legal, some not – to steal millions of votes in battleground states, i.e. AZ, GA, PA, MI, and NV which saw extensive ‘election shenanigans’ in 2020; and
- Nurturing a slate of America First candidates to primary RINO incumbents and then challenge Democrats in the midterms to gain a majority in both houses.
Trump confirmed Tuesday, “Trump-endorsed candidates won 232 races with only 22 losses.” This tally is as of November 18th. The Arizona governors race between America First Kari Lake and Katie Hobbs hangs in the balance. A Kari Lake win would enhance this record immeasurably.
Trump is town crier.
Trump is Man in the Arena
Soaking wet, drenched in rain – with the crowd now surprisingly joyous at being caught in the rain – the former president finished his speech in fine form making jokes about the rain as he went. “You know what,” said Trump, “this might be the best rally yet.” The spontaneity of the moment seemed to transcend the relationship between him and the audience. The bond was now made tighter. It was like the climax of a film, where the hero prevails and then chuckles with self-satisfaction.
Trump is Mensch
Blacks call him Daddy T. Bannon says he’s gangsta. Trump is the OG and he’s definitively mensch.
He is, more than anyone we can think of in current times, the embodiment of grit, determination, commitment, vision; and, yes taking the meaning of mensch literally, possessing of ‘character and integrity.’
No other politician or political leader can hope to resonate with voters like Trump.
He tells us it’s not about him or because of him, it’s “because we have built a movement and it’s the greatest political movement this country has ever seen or maybe even in the world.”
His rallies may be the only refuge Trump has in an increasingly hostile if not dangerous (something he alluded to Tuesday) environment of our politics, however. It is because of this danger, that Trump is seen as a moral force for good.
After hitting inspirational notes with “we will make America glorious and great again” and “we will rescue the American dream” (heroic wording), and after presenting a set of bold new policy proposals couched in serious terms (stressing he would ‘dismantle’ the administrative state, and notably wants to build a missile defense shield with the reemergence of nuclear threats, for instance), Trump evoked the dangers he faces going forward.
Toward the close, Trump gave us a sobering list of dark forces waiting to resist and attack both himself and his supporters:
We will be resisted by the combined forces of the establishment, the media, the special interests, the globalists, the Marxist, radicals, the woke corporations, the weaponized power of the federal government, the colossal political machines, the tidal wave of dark money and the most dangerous domestic censorship system ever created by man or woman. The most dangerous system we’ve ever had.
We will be attacked. We will be slandered. We will be persecuted just as I have been. I mean I have been, but many people in this room have been. But we will not be intimidated. We will persevere. We will stand tall in the storm. We will march forward into the torrent and we in the end will win. Our country will win. We will win.
@59:45, DONALD J. TRUMP (11/15/22)
(Full transcript linked below.)
The battle lines have been drawn. Trump’s direct opposition to powerful forces automatically casts him as hero.
His love for America and his dedication to saving her from powerful factions who have taken direct, severe, and unprecedented actions to bring down his first campaign, his presidency, and now his post-presidency — no matter the odds combine with his ability to rise from the ashes like a Phoenix to take up the challenge of being president again. The pummeling he has taken is the stuff of myth.
Today is yet another case in point: Attorney General Merrick Garland announced he is appointing a special counsel to investigate Trump over the ‘Mar-a-Lago papers’. Trump will be speaking about it tonight at 8:30 pm from Mar-a-Lago.
This news comes a day after Republicans in the House announced that they would launch an investigation into President Biden – not just his son, Hunter – for his and that of his family’s business dealings based on whistle blower reports submitted to House members. The allegations span domestic and international schemes involving shell companies, money laundering, bilking investors, influence peddling, and alleged human trafficking. (A link to the news conference held by House Republicans can be found below.)
Trump is Sisyphus, and Atlas, and Braveheart
It’s no wonder that We the People see him in heroic terms. The powers that be know this. They’ve tried everything from censorship to sending swat teams to homes of conservative activists in an attempt to stop the Trump contagion. Of course we need saving — look at what they have done! Look at what they are planning to do!
They have no intention of relinquishing their power, but as long as Donald J. Trump fights in our stead, we have a chance of throwing off the yoke of creeping totalitarianism.
Many people in my social media network say that his jab at DeSantis was the last straw. A slew of conservative pundits, whom Trump has considered friends, like Candace Owens turned on him.
They say a day in politics is equal to a year. They used a One Year Gripe Coupon out 730 political years.
Odds are The Punisher will turn that around.
